Abstract:
This article aims to analyze the history of obstetric nursing in Brazil. To this end, a
narrative review of the literature was carried out from July to September 2022, on the
Virtual Health Library (VHL) website, with the following descriptors in Health Sciences
(DeCS): history of nursing, nurses obstetrics and nursing care. Of the 25 articles
found, only eight were included. The selected studies analyzed the historical
perspective of nursing and the formation and insertion of these professionals in the
job market. Advances can be seen in the training of midwives through specialization
courses in obstetrics, in which the emphasis is on promoting humanized care,
respecting the physiological character of the delivery process. On the other hand,
there are challenges in the field of professional recognition, requiring planning and
formulation of political strategies.
