Abstract:
Aging is a continuous natural condition, which is related to systemic changes,
generally affecting biological, social, postural and psychological areas. This process
causes changes in the individual's functionality and structure, making them more
vulnerable to a set of intrinsic or extrinsic factors. The present work is justified,
because when talking about quality of life in the elderly, it is important to consider
several factors, as well as physical and psychological well-being, level of
independence, social relationships, work environment, leisure, among others.
Practicing physical exercise is essential for human health at any age. In view of this,
the following question arose, what are the benefits of practicing physical activity for
elderly people in long-term care institutions for the elderly. The present study aims to
address the benefits of physical activity with a focus on prevention and improvement
in the health status of elderly people in long-term care institutions for the elderly
(ILPI). The type of research carried out in this work was a literature review, adopting
articles published in the Portuguese language, available in full and published
between 2013 and 2023. Thus, the interest in a better quality of life is increasing and
the Physical activity is evident as a relevant role in improving the health of elderly
people. Physical activities are important for maintaining health, flexibility and
longevity, as well as reducing pain and symptoms of physical illnesses.
