Abstract:
Knowledge of the dynamics of the maxillomandibular complex and understanding the
disorders caused by malocclusion is of paramount importance for all areas of Dentistry. A
determining factor for occlusion is exclusive breastfeeding, as it positively influences the
development of the stomatognathic system, enabling adequate suction and correct positioning
of the tongue and lips, in synchrony with swallowing and breathing. Excluded oral habits
result from the reproduction of acts for specific purposes, with different frequencies, duration
and intensity; habits that are initially conscious, but become automatic and unconscious over
time. Its consequences involve changes in the stomatognathic system, changes in the dentition
and changes in facial morphology. The objectives of this research are to investigate the
advantages of early diagnosis and treatment of harmful oral habits, for an effective reversal
treatment; present the consequences of deciduous teeth and errors, as well as mention the
forms of intervention and treatment. Bibliographical research was carried out, seeking
background on the research object, with a literature review that allowed gathering and
handling various previous information, data and scientific discoveries, prioritizing scientific
publications published, with emphasis, in the period between 2019 and 2023. It is concluded
that the treatment of anterior open bite begins as early as possible, in the primary dentition,
and there may be self-correction driven by the simple abandonment of the excluded habit, or,
later, via the use of palatal degrees, spurs or fixed orthodontics. It is up to the dentist to
identify, classify and determine the most assertive moment and treatment.
