Abstract:
Laminitis in dairy cows is a disease that affects the hooves, causing inflammation of
the laminae. It is usually diagnosed in cows that are in Free Stall confinement, with
diets rich in concentrate. Environmental factors are also important for the
development of this disease. Preventing laminitis is done by trimming the shards and
offering a balanced diet. The diagnosis is based on the history of each animal, with
lameness as the main characteristic in clinical signs. If not diagnosed early and
followed by specific treatment, the animal may be discarded from the herd due to low
milk production and generate costs for the producer.
