Abstract:
The dependence on psychoactive substances is a growing issue, especially among
adults, due to the fast-paced lifestyle and anxiety, which often lead to insomnia.
Zolpidem, a non-benzodiazepine hypnotic, has gained prominence due to itsincreasing use in treating sleep disorders, but it presents a concerning potential for
abuse and dependence. This study reviewed the scientific literature between 2020 and
2024 to map the usage profile and consequences of zolpidem. Thirteen articles were
analyzed, selected after excluding studies that did not meet the filter criteria, such as
duplication, language, or animal studies. The results showed widespread use and
abuse of zolpidem, particularly among young adults, often combined with alcohol
consumption at parties, amplifying its risks. Initially considered an alternative to
benzodiazepines, zolpidem, due to its easy prescription, became a cause for concern.
Any doctor with an active registration could prescribe it, even without specialization,
contributing to its prolonged and unsupervised use. The review highlighted its high
dependence potential, emphasizing that combining it with other drugs increases the
risks. The research underscores the need for stricter prescription controls and
awareness campaigns about the dangers of indiscriminate use of this medication.
Healthcare professionals must adopt strict practices to prevent abuse and protect
patients' health, especially young adults, who are the most vulnerable.
