Abstract:
Introduction: Gestational diabetes affects 18% of Brazilian women (PAHO, 2016). In
this sense, the study analyzed the role of nurses in the care of pregnant women with
GDM, aiming to ensure maternal well-being, prevent complications and reduce health
care costs. Objective: To conduct a study on the contribution of care provided by
nurses to patients with gestational diabetes. Methodology: This is an integrative
literature review study with a qualitative approach, with the guiding question: What is
the relationship between the role of nurses and the care provided to women with
gestational diabetes? Data collection was performed in the Google Scholar, LILACS
and PubMed databases, using the descriptors in Portuguese “Diabetes gestacional”,
“Papel do enfermeiro”, “cuidados de enfermagem" and in English “gestational
diabetes”, “nurse care”. Results and Discussion: 11 scientific articles were
analyzed. The analysis of the studies points to the importance of prenatal care as a
crucial point for detecting gestational diabetes, through active listening, nurses gain
the trust of pregnant women and encourage them to take care of themselves.
Furthermore, care for gestational diabetes faces challenges such as lack of
guidelines, lack of resources and shortage of professionals. Final considerations: It
was understood that Gestational Diabetes Mellitus requires comprehensive care, and
the nurse plays a fundamental role in early detection, guidance and continuous
monitoring. The implementation of specific guidelines and integration of health
services are necessary to ensure comprehensive care for pregnant women.
