Abstract:
The irrational use of oral corticosteroids represents a serious challenge to public
health, resulting in frequent hospitalizations and medical care, in addition to
increasing costs and the demand for health services. This practice compromises the
effectiveness of treatments and patient safety. This study analyzes the patterns of
inappropriate use of these medications, their causes and consequences, highlighting
the associated risks, such as hypertension, diabetes, osteoporosis and infections.
Using a descriptive and analytical approach, the study investigates the factors that
lead to irrational use and evaluates the impacts on patient health. The research
adopts a qualitative exploratory methodology, based on a literature review, aiming to
identify solutions to this problem. The study contributes to a deeper understanding ofthe topic and proposes practical recommendations to promote the rational use of oral
corticosteroids. The results highlight the need for a strategy to eliminate or reduce
this practice, including better prescriptions, continuing education for health
professionals and awareness campaigns for the population.
