Abstract:
Benzodiazepines are medications with anxiolytic and relaxing properties, frequently
used in clinical practice due to their broad spectrum of symptomatic action, leading to
the increasing use of these medications by the population, both through medical
prescription and self-medication. However, excessive use of benzodiazepines brings
acute and chronic consequences, such as the deterioration of the individual's quality of
life, due to drug interactions, which can trigger dependence and cause problems to the
body, making its interruption difficult due to factors associated with dependence.
Through a literature review, this study aimed to present the importance of
pharmaceutical care regarding the social and clinical impacts of benzodiazepine use.
The methodology used articles, within a time frame of 2014 to 2023, that highlighted
the relevant and considerable factors for pharmacist study in this care at the time of
sale, since the pharmacist is the gateway to obtaining this drug. Through the research
conducted, it was discovered that the misuse of this medication can be attributed to the
doctor, the patient, or even the pharmacist, who should be informed about the risks of
using this medication, including dependence. It was noted that it is important for
professionals to pay attention to verifying prescriptions, as patients may obtain false
prescriptions to obtain the medication. Finally, it is concluded that further studies
involving this topic are necessary, so that a structured debate with scientific
foundations can be established to inform pharmacy professionals about their
importance in this area, following ethical codes and having the responsibility to provide
information to society, always seeking the well-being of the patient.
