Abstract:
The gut microbiota has been extensively investigated due to its essential role in
metabolic, immunological, and inflammatory regulation. In the sports context,
emerging evidence suggests that its composition and functionality may influence
physiological responses to exercise, recovery, and physical performance. In this
scenario, diet and supplementation with probiotics and prebiotics have been
proposed as potential strategies to optimize athletic performance and overall
health in athletes. However, despite the growing body of research, gaps remain
regarding the magnitude of these effects and the most effective approaches for
microbiota modulation. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the influence of gut
microbiota and supplementation with probiotics and prebiotics on sports
performance, focusing on potential benefits related to performance, recovery, and
overall athlete health.
