Abstract:
Bovine mastitis is one of the main diseases affecting dairy farming, with direct
repercussions on productivity, milk quality, and the economic viability of production
systems. This study aimed to analyze the influence of pre- and post-milking
management practices on the occurrence and control of mastitis in dairy herds,
highlighting the main recommended procedures and their relationship with hygienicsanitary
indicators. A bibliographic review was conducted based on scientific articles,
technical documents, and national and international regulations, with emphasis on
recent data. The results showed that the systematic implementation of pre- and postmilking
protocols, including teat cleaning, individual drying, forestripping using a strip
cup, and post-milking disinfection, is associated with a significant reduction in the
rates of new intramammary infections, somatic cell count (SCC), and total bacterial
count (TBC), contributing to the prevention of clinical and subclinical mastitis.
Furthermore, inadequate practices, such as the collective use of cloths for drying or
the absence of pre- and post-dipping, were associated with higher SCC and TBC
levels, compromising compliance with the parameters established by Normative
Instruction No. 76/2018 (Brazil, 2018) and leading to relevant economic losses. It is
concluded that the standardization and consistent adherence to milking procedures
represent strategic tools for the control of bovine mastitis, requiring integration
between technical knowledge, workforce training, and policies that encourage milk
quality.
