Abstract:
This study aims to analyze the use of botulinum toxin type A in the treatment of facial
paralysis, emphasizing its therapeutic, functional, and aesthetic effects. It is a
qualitative literature review with an exploratory and descriptive character, conducted
through searches in PubMed and SciELO, considering publications from the last 5
years. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 25 studies were selected for
analysis. The results show that botulinum toxin acts by blocking the release of
acetylcholine at nerve endings, promoting temporary muscle relaxation. This
mechanism contributes to the reduction of spasms, synkinesis, and involuntary
movements. However, the treatment requires periodic reapplications due to itstemporary nature and dependence on technique and professional experience. In
conclusion, botulinum toxin represents an effective, safe, and minimally invasive
therapeutic alternative in the management of facial paralysis, especially when
combined with other rehabilitation approaches.
