Abstract:
Introduction. Functional health literacy is the individual's ability to develop skills to perform, understand, assess and perform daily activities aimed at self-care. Thus, the practices developed through health literacy are essential in the aging process for disease prevention and health promotion. Goal. Identify nursing challenges in functional literacy in the face of drug treatment in geriatrics. Methodology. This is an integrative literature review, carried out in the following databases: Scielo, Pubmed, BDENF, BVS and Academic Google. Results. Factors directly influencing the level of health literacy about elderly people with low education levels and communication deficits among professionals in the transfer of information were identified, due to the lack of simple and effective communication interfering with drug treatment. Elderly people with a higher level of education have a better self-perception of health. Conclusion. It evidenced the need for qualification of nursing professionals to support actions that facilitate communication with the elderly, in order to promote autonomy and self-care through literacy.
