Abstract:
Gender violence against women is a serious international problem that violates
human rights. International conventions, such as the Inter-American Convention to
Prevent, Punish and Eradicate Violence against Women, and UN resolutions have
recognized the seriousness of this type of violence. However, despite regulatory
advances, the culture of discrimination and male dominance is e continues to
perpetuate sexual violence. It is essential to implement comprehensive public policies
and promote a paradigm shift to ensure the effective protection of women. The
protection of women victims of gender-based violence requires action at both the national and international levels. Brazil, for example, was condemned by the Inter American Court of Human Rights due to weaknesses in its protection institutions.
Purpose: to analyze gender violence, especially sexual violence, as a violation of
human rights, with emphasis on male dominance patterns and rape culture, which are
often reinforced. Methodology: The present study is about a qualitative approach, for
the identification of productions on the theme. A literature review was adopted.
Conclusion: Gender violence, resulting from a social and cultural construction that
establishes male domination, has the symbolic power to legitimize and naturalize the
problem as a social issue that requires a political and public approach. However, for it
to be truly faced, it is fundamental to recognize it as a violation of human rights.
