Abstract:
Introduction: Breastfeeding is essential for the proper development and protection of
the baby. In light of this information, healthcare professionals, especially those working
in primary care, require specific knowledge and skills related to breastfeeding.
Objective: To analyze the performance of nursing professionals in family health teams
regarding their knowledge and guidance on breastfeeding in the municipality of
Ituiutaba, Minas Gerais. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional, descriptive,
exploratory study with a quantitative approach, conducted between October and
November 2023. Semi-structured questionnaires were used for nursing professionals,
supplemented by additional questionnaires for pregnant women. The questionnaires
included inquiries about the functionality of the Family Health Strategy (FHS) in
question, the professional's knowledge, and sociodemographic characteristics of the
samples. Results and Discussion: Among the respondents, 13 (81.3%) professionals
reported receiving guidance on approaching pregnant women and postpartum mothers
regarding breastfeeding. Regarding interviews with pregnant and postpartum women,
83 (79.8%) participants stated that they were unaware of the existence of prenatal care
groups in the unit where they receive prenatal care. Conclusion: The low adherence
to prenatal care groups and lack of knowledge about breastfeeding support groups
may indicate communication and publicity shortcomings, underscoring the need for
more effective strategies. On the other hand, the commitment of professionals to
conducting home visits highlights a personalized approach, while the diversity in
sources of guidance suggests opportunities for improving professional training.
