Abstract:
Canine monocytic ehrlichiosis is a disease transmitted by the bite of the
Rhipicephalus sanguineus tick that affects dogs and is caused by the species
Ehrlichia canis. It is a gram negative bacteria that infects monocytes and triggers
symptoms such as high fever, anorexia, bleeding, anemia and some serious
problems if left untreated. This disease presents itself in three distinct phases, in
each phase it is necessary to use an appropriate diagnostic methodology to be able
to identify the agent. It is extremely important to identify the disease early on, in order
to prevent the disease from progressing to more critical stages. A complete
anamnesis and correct interpretation of exams are decisive actions for an accurate
diagnosis. The treatment is medicated, the antibiotic of choice to treat ehrlichiosis is doxycycline administered for 28 days and supportive medication according to the
clinical manifestations of each animal. In general, it is a treatable disease and the
animal can have a good quality of life, without any consequences. Ectoparasite
control is the most effective way to prevent the disease. This article is a case report
of a dog, which was treated at the RoyalVet veterinary clinic, with canine monocytic
ehrlichiosis.
