Abstract:
The present work aims to identify whether the manifestations of nephropathies in the
elderly may be associated with the indiscriminate use of non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), associating the adverse effects of this class of
medications that occur through the inhibition of cyclooxygenases, preventing
arachidonic acid from being converted into prostaglandin, which has an important role
in renal physiology, acting as vasodilators and increasing renal perfusion, considering
increased age and consequently decreased renal perfusion as a risk factor. The
objective of the work is to carry out a study on the interactions of non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs in cases of nephropathy in the elderly. To this end, bibliographical
research of qualitative nature was carried out, analyzing scientific articles and
monographs published in SciELO, Google Scholar, Scientific Journals in the area of
pharmacy and medicine, in the period from 2009 to 2023. The study showed that the
adverse effects of NSAIDs, associated with decreased renal function, due to
physiological processes of aging, can lead to irreversible cases of nephropathies. It is
concluded that the use of any class of NSAIDs can generate or worsen nephropathies
in elderly patients, which is why their use must be accompanied by a health
professional, thus highlighting the importance of the pharmaceutical professional in the
rational use of medicines.
