Abstract:
This study addresses a reflection on schooling in modern society based on the ideas of
Hannah Arendt. The German author highlights humanity’s pursuit to overcome its natural
conditions through scientific and technological progress. However, this progress has led to an
increasingly mechanized world focused on non-biological forces. From this perspective, the
school is seen merely as a place for the exchange of information to shape future
entrepreneurs, workers, and consumers. This results in the erosion of the public common
sphere of coexistence and raises questions about the purpose of learning and teaching in
school. The author argues that the school encompasses more than just the student's learning
and includes the physical institution, pedagogical theories, didactic dimensions, teachers, and
students. The essence of the school is associated with human formation, awakening critical
consciousness, and promoting the humanization of individuals. The analysis is based on the
works of Hannah Arendt, exploring concepts such as homo faber, animal laborans, private
sphere, social sphere, political sphere, tradere, leisure, and others. The central concern is the
erosion of the school space and the imposition of an exclusive teaching model, neglecting
other possibilities of humanization. The study also highlights the importance of politics in
human life and the influence of modern society in weakening the public and communal space.
Additionally, some authors who utilize Hannah Arendt's concepts to address education and
politics in modernity are mentioned.
