Abstract:
The dissertation "Representation of Black People in High School Portuguese Language Textbooks and Their Role in Promoting Racial Equality" analyzes the representation of black people in the textbook "Português: Linguagens" by William Roberto Cereja and Thereza Cochar Magalhães, used in public schools in Mineiros, Goiás. The research investigates how these educational materials contribute to promoting racial equality according to the guidelines of Law 10.639/03 and the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC). The main objective is to evaluate the presence and quality of representations of black people and the inclusion of Afro-Brazilian content in the analyzed textbook. Specific objectives include reflecting on the discrimination and marginalization of black people, discussing the importance of disseminating Afro-Brazilian culture, analyzing the impact of educational policies on racial representation, and proposing strategies for improving educational materials. Using a qualitative approach and document analysis, the research reveals that, although there are efforts to include Afro-Brazilian content, representations of black people are still insufficient and often stereotypical. The dissertation concludes that effectively promoting racial equality in textbooks requires continuous content review and improved representation methods, as well as adequate training for educators and active participation of the school community in the creation and selection of educational materials.
